We've all been there: we've ordered on an online site, perhaps during a sale period, the item we wanted and now we can't wait for the parcel containing it and its shipment to reach us at home: so we decide to check, thanks to the tracking what stage our shipment is at, trying to figure out in about how many days we might receive the parcel.
It sometimes happens, however, that once you have accessed the tracking site, the result is a message advising you that the product has not been delivered; in other cases, it is even possible that this notice of non-delivery is left inside the letterbox or on the surface of external intercoms.
In this article, we want to talk about this very topic: we will start by explaining what is actually meant when one hears about non-delivery; subsequently, we will analyse the various cases of non-delivery, focusing on what should be done in each of these situations.
What is meant by non-delivery
As we have said, whether on the online tracking or that it is attached to our letterbox, when it comes to parcel shipments (whether national or international shipments) it has happened - or can happen to everyone - to receive a non-delivery notice. But what is meant by non-delivery?
Banally, with the term non-delivery refers to those cases where the express courier attempted to deliver that shipment, but failed to do so for a variety of reasons: the recipient may not have been at home; the courier company itself may have made mistakes; the shipping address turned out to be wrong; the shipment of the parcel by the seller is delayed; and much more. There are many reasons whereby a non-delivery may occur, but the common denominator is only one: the addressee of the shipment has not received the package intended for him.
In the next section of this article, we will analyse the various cases of non-delivery, which may be related to the reasons we listed a few lines ago. More specifically, we will understand what needs to be done in the event that the express courier (which may be, for example, the BRT courier) did not find the addressee of the shipment at home at the time of delivery; we will understand what to do in the event that the parcel was not delivered; finally, we will also look for the solution in the event that, although the parcel was not delivered, it nevertheless arrived at its destination and was delivered to its addressee.
A list of all the various cases of non-delivery
At the end of the last paragraph we have already listed the various cases of non-delivery of a shipment and a parcel: each of these is linked, as we have already mentioned, to a particular reason. In this paragraph, however, we will devote ourselves to listing the cases we mentioned earlier, while also providing some useful and practical tips on how to behave in these specific situations.
The express courier found no one at home at the time of delivery: what to do in such cases
It can very often happen that the express courier rings the doorbell at the recipient's home and that there is no one present at home who can answer and, therefore, collect the parcel: in cases like this, of course, the express courier is obliged to leave a notice of non-delivery in the mailbox or is required to leave an update to that effect on the online tracking.
It tends to be the case that when ordering, the recipient of the shipment has the option of adding his or her own telephone numberIn this case, the express courier may also decide to make a telephone call to the addressee, so as to reschedule a shipment or to agree on a place to leave the parcel, which could be a neighbour's house, a letterbox, etc.
The parcel was not delivered: what to do in such cases
If, on the other hand, the express courier does not have the recipient's telephone number available or has no way of leaving the parcel with a neighbour of the recipient, the parcel cannot be delivered and it will be necessary to proceed with a second delivery attempt of the shipment, which in many cases can also be scheduled according to the needs of the recipient and the courier itself.
In other cases, however, if a second attempt to deliver the parcel is not possible, it may be left in stock at a post office or one of the courier's nearest locations. For the recipient, this means having to go to these locations to pick up the parcel. To avoid this, our advice is to try to be at home on the day of delivery or, if this is not possible, to make sure that there is someone who can pick up the parcel for you.
The parcel is delivered: what to do in such cases
In still other cases, it may happen that, although the recipient did not actually receive the parcel, it was nevertheless delivered. What could have happened? And what to do in such cases?
The first thing to do is to contact your neighbour or the gatehouse of one's own apartment building: as we have said, it is very often the case that the courier, in the absence of the addressee, leaves the parcel with a neighbour or the doorman, so that the addressee can receive the parcel as soon as he returns home.
Otherwise, if the parcel was delivered neither to a neighbour nor to the concierge of the apartment building, then it might be useful to contact who took care of the shipment, who can get in touch with the courier and clarify where the parcel in question actually went.
