US Customs 2026: what has changed and how to send parcels without any problems

Shipping to the United States in 2025 requires more care than before. The new trade policies introduced by the US administration have changed the rules that had been in place for decades. Here’s what you need to know:

The abolition of the de minimis rule

Until August 2025, consignments worth less than $800 could enter the US without paying customs duties (the “de minimis” scheme). This benefit has been abolished: All consignments containing goods, regardless of their value, are now subject to customs valuation and potential duties.

The only remaining exceptions are:

  • Gifts with a declared value of less than 100 USD
  • Personal belongings worth up to 200 USD carried directly by travellers

What does that mean to you?

  • Each consignment must include a commercial or pro forma invoice with a detailed description of the goods, the value per item and the country of origin
  • Incorrect or incomplete value declarations may result in customs hold even for weeks

How to write the address correctly on your parcel for the United States

When sending a parcel to the United States, always check that the recipient’s address follows the American format: house number first the street name (unlike in Italy), the flat/suite number (if applicable), the city, the two-letter country code and the postcode. An incomplete address is one of the most common causes of delays and undelivered parcels in the US.

It’s the attention to detail that makes all the difference:

  • The The house number always comes first the street name (350 Fifth Avenue, not Fifth Avenue 350)
  • La country code It is compulsory and must be written in two capital letters (NY, CA, TX, FL)
  • The Postcode It is essential: without it, the parcel won’t be dispatched
  • Always enter a the recipient’s local telephone number: American couriers use it to coordinate deliveries
  • If the recipient lives in a block of flats, always include Flat/Suite/Unit with the number — without it, the courier may return the parcel as “insufficient address”

With express delivery (DHL, FedEx, UPS), delivery takes place within 2–3 working days of collection. With TNT Economy Express, delivery takes 4–6 working days. Delivery times may be extended in the event of US customs inspection.
