How FedEx calculates weight: real vs volumetric
FedEx, like all international express couriers, applies the taxable weight - i.e. the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight. The volumetric weight is calculated using the formula:
Volumetric weight (kg) = (Length cm × Width cm × Height cm) ÷ 5,000
For example, a 60×40×40 cm box has a volumetric weight of 19.2 kg - even if the contents weigh only 5 kg. In this case FedEx invoices the volumetric weight, not the actual weight.
