✈️ Send parcels to Europe with SpedizioneComoda.com

Europe is not a homogeneous region from a logistical and customs perspective: there are significant differences between shipments within the EU, to neighbouring non-EU countries such as Switzerland and Norway, to the post-Brexit UK, and to countries in the Balkans or Eastern Europe. Being aware of these differences before shipping helps to avoid surprises regarding costs, delivery times and documentation.

  • Within the EU (27 countries): No customs formalities, no additional paperwork, fast delivery. Send parcels to France, Germany and Spain exactly as you would within Italy.
  • Nearby non-EU countries (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra): outside the EU but geographically integrated. They require a pro forma invoice and customs clearance.
  • Great Britain: Withdrawal from the EU following Brexit (2021). Compulsory customs clearance, VAT threshold of £135, EORI for commercial consignments. → See the dedicated page.
  • The Balkans and Eastern Europe (Serbia, Albania, Ukraine, Turkey, Georgia…): non-EU countries, subject to full customs procedures and higher tariffs.

💡 SpedizioneComoda tip: For intra-EU shipments, you do not need any customs documents. Your parcel travels freely between the 27 EU countries as if it were a domestic shipment. It is the same principle as the European single market, applied to logistics.

The golden rule for the description of goods:

🚫 DO NOT write: “gift”, “clothes”, “personal items”, “goods”.”

✅ WRITE IN: “Men's cotton T-shirt - 2 pieces - value EUR 45 - made in Italy”.”

Vague descriptions = suspicious customs = blockage of the parcel. The more precise you are, the faster customs clearance.

📄 Customs procedures for sending parcels to Europe

EU countries: no customs checks

For shipments to the 27 countries of the European Union, there are no customs formalities. The European Single Market guarantees the free movement of goods without barriers. No additional documents are required compared with a domestic shipment: just the correct address and suitable packaging.

⚠️ Non-EU countries: customs clearance required

For Switzerland, Norway, Great Britain, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra and all the Balkan and Eastern European countries, customs clearance is compulsory.

👉 European Commission — TARIC customs duties

Documents required:

  • Commercial or pro forma invoice in English (or in the language of the country)
  • Detailed description of the goods — never “gift” or “goods”
  • Declared actual value — customs checks
  • Sender’s EORI number for commercial consignments
  • Country of origin of the goods

💡 📋 TARIC code: every product that crosses a customs border has an HS/TARIC code which determines the duty applied. Find out what the TARIC code is

🚫 Always avoid these descriptions:

  • “gift” — held up at customs
  • “personal items” — too vague
  • “goods” — rejected

Use precise descriptions:

  • “Leather shoes – 1 pair – value €90 – made in Italy”
  • “Printed book – 3 volumes – value €45”
  • “Steel mechanical components – 5 items – value €200”

🇬🇧 Great Britain and Brexit: what’s changing for deliveries

⚠️ On 1 January 2021, the United Kingdom left the European Union. Shipments to Great Britain are no longer considered intra-EU: they require customs clearance, a pro forma invoice and — for commercial shipments — the sender’s EORI number. It is one of the most popular non-EU destinations for Italians.

Key post-Brexit differences:

  • VAT (VAT) UK: de minimis threshold of £135 — below this threshold, VAT is collected by the seller at the time of sale; above it, VAT is payable on importation
  • Customs duties: applicable to goods not produced in the EU or the UK, in accordance with the rules of origin
  • EORI: compulsory for B2B commercial shipments
  • Extra time: Please allow an additional 1–2 working days for UK customs clearance (HMRC)
  • Prices: from €9.56 per 1 kg — competitive thanks to the volume of UK shipments on our network

❓ FAQs — Shipping to Europe

Is sending a parcel to an EU country any different from sending one to Italy?

From a customs perspective, no: the European Single Market removes all customs barriers between the 27 EU countries. No additional documents are required. The only difference is the cost of delivery, which depends on the distance and the courier chosen.

How much does it cost to send a 1 kg parcel to Germany?

From €9.46 with the most affordable service available on SpedizioneComoda.com. Use the calculator for an up-to-date quote, including the fuel surcharge.

Do you need to go through customs to send a parcel to Switzerland?

Yes. Switzerland is not part of the European Union (although it is part of the Schengen Area for the movement of people). Every consignment requires a pro forma invoice, a description of the goods and the declared actual value. Swiss customs are efficient and processing times are generally 1–2 additional days.

How has Brexit affected shipments to Great Britain?

From 1 January 2021, the UK is outside the EU: a pro forma invoice is required, as well as HMRC customs clearance, and for commercial shipments, the sender’s EORI number. There is a VAT threshold of £135 that determines who pays VAT. Clearing times are extended by 1–2 days. See our dedicated page for full details: spedizionecomoda.com/spedizioni-internazionali/spedire-pacco-in-inghilterra/

Can I send parcels to Albania, Serbia or Ukraine?

Yes. These are non-EU countries with full customs procedures. The rates are higher than in Western Europe. Always allow an extra 2–4 days for local customs clearance. Please refer to the price tables in the ‘Balkans and Eastern Europe’ section above.

How many days does it take for a parcel to arrive from Milan to Paris?

Via DHL or UPS Express within 1 working day. Via economy services within 2–3 days. France is one of the European destinations with the fastest delivery times from Italy.
